TNEI On Grid – The Connections Crunch

The industry has a problem. The connections queue currently contains more than double the generation capacity that is required in Great Britain. This poses the question, how are the networks handling the overabundance of generation developments and how will their solutions impact the future of GB’s pipeline of renewable energy? What is the Connections Queue? The connection queue comprises projects waiting connection to the network, with generators now being offered connection dates into the late 2030s and almost 2040. As of 5th November 2024, NESO published in their Great Britain’s Connections Reform -Overview Document’ that the connection queue currently consists of over 750 GW of capacity. TNEI estimate that the current transmission queue, in addition to the distribution queue (>1 MW), could supply close to twice the required installed capacity for the most ambitious 2024 FES scenario (Holistic Transition) as seen in Figure 1. Cape Town Team volunteer with the penguins! 

African Penguins are on the brink of extinction, largely due to dwindling food sources caused by climate change and commercial fishing. With fewer than 10,000 breeding pairs left.   With this in mind, the whole of the TNEI Africa team spent a day of their time on a sunny day in October volunteering at SANCCOB seabird Sanctuary as their 25th Anniversary celebration. They definitely win the prize across the group for the most exotic volunteering location!    SANCCOB is a registered non-profit organisation whose primary objective is to reverse the decline of seabird populations through the rescue, rehabilitation and release of ill, injured, abandoned and oiled seabirds – especially endangered species like the African penguin.  Since working with these threatened birds takes specialist training, volunteers that visit the centre are normally assigned tasks that the penguin experts do not have time for. Graduate Consultants on Tour!

TNEI’s annual Graduate Induction Week is the foundation for our Graduate Training Programme and the commencement of the lifelong learning opportunity that TNEI provides. This year’s event kicked off in Manchester with the Annual New Starter Day and a warm welcome from CEO, Nigel Tate.  The day provided the opportunity for our new arrivals from across the company to meet at TNEI’s Head Office in Manchester. Visitors took part in a variety of sessions providing a broader understanding of our technical teams, our Wellbeing & Inclusion Group, Climate Action Forum and Charity Committee, alongside an introduction from Employee Ownership Representatives. Building on from the New Starter Day, the Graduate Induction Week is a road trip of learning around our UK offices. TNEI Ireland team dig, plant and harvest for an eco-conscious future

As part of TNEI’s 25th anniversary celebrations, our Ireland team recently came together to volunteer at a local community garden, where they rolled up their sleeves and contributed to growing a more sustainable future. The Green Living & Sustainability Community Garden (GLAS) at TU Dublin, is built on organic and regenerative principles, is a place where the community works hand-in-hand to cultivate fresh produce, share harvests, and promote environmental stewardship. The team spent the day harvesting vibrant chillies and ripe corn, which were shared among the volunteers. In addition to harvesting, the team helped plant a variety of fruits and vegetables, contributing to the garden’s continued growth and sustainability. The community garden fosters an inclusive, collaborative atmosphere, where everyone can pitch in and benefit from the harvests. Green-fingered Glasgow team volunteer with Gartnavel Hospital – Celebrating 25 years of TNEI

On a chilly, drizzly day in Glasgow last month, our team, tougher than old boots, suited up in safety gear to lend a hand to the amazing “Growing Spaces” at Gartnavel Royal Hospital. Growing Spaces is the green strand of art in the gart – a collaborative way of working which increases access to art, the environment and meaningful activity to support and promote mental health recovery and wellbeing. Fiona & Paul were very happy to be able to welcome the team as corporate volunteers onto the site and into the Growing Spaces. Gartnavel Royal Hospital has been delivering structured psychiatric care for more than two hundred years and offers valuable opportunities for individuals with mental illness to engage with nature and participate in farm activities. Strategic Advancements in Offshore Multi Terminal DC Networks (MTDC) for Enhanced System Services

TNEI has been awarded a prestigious innovation grant award in partnership with Cardiff University, as part of a ground breaking offshore wind energy project funded by Innovate UK under the UK-US Offshore Wind Collaborative R&D competition. This project also involves collaboration with the US-based Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), with separate funding provided by the National Offshore Wind Research and Development Consortium (NOWRDC)’s state members Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, Maryland Energy Administration and New Jersey Board of Public Utilities. The UK government has set an ambitious target of achieving 50GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030, a significant leap from the current 15GW. To support this growth, National Grid Electricity System Operator (NGESO) has outlined the Holistic Network Design (HND), a critical infrastructure blueprint designed to enable this expansion. A key element of the HND is the introduction of Multi Terminal DC (MTDC) networks, which will connect offshore wind farms
