We have been operating in Ireland for over 15 years and have established TNEI Ireland Ltd, to better serve our Irish clients and support them in delivering Ireland’s ambitious 2030 climate targets and towards a net zero future.

TNEI Ireland is a small, but rapidly growing, team of passionate, committed and talented engineers and scientists supported by our colleagues in our other offices in Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow and Cape Town. We operate in both Ireland and Northern Ireland and have an expert knowledge of the technical, commercial and regulatory requirements in both jurisdictions.

We offer expertise, insight and innovation relating to power system studies, in particular feasibility and capability connection studies, grid code compliance and power quality, bespoke constraint analysis, grid development studies as well as noise monitoring and shadow flicker assessments.

We place out clients at the forefront and support and guide them through projects from concept stage to delivery. Our clients range from utilities, large and small project developers (onshore and offshore), industrial organisations and manufacturers, regulators, development banks, public sector bodies and community groups.

We thrive on excellence, passion and exceeding expectations in all that we do, providing high quality, industry leading services.

Bespoke constraints analysis

Constraint relates to local transmission network limitations, specifically the overloading of transmission lines, cables and transformers and can be considerably different depending on where a generator connects. How can a new generator have any certainty about the commercial viability of their project when entering into the development pipeline without understanding the potential constraints facing their connection? TNEI can help.

Our Experience
TNEI has developed a modelling tool to perform network constraint analysis. This tool offers flexibility when calculating the MWh and percentage of power reduction, based on a whole-year hourly simulation. This in-house tool has been benchmarked against EirGrid’s own published figures. Bespoke constraint analysis, that is proven to be dependable, can help identify risk regarding the financial feasibility of generators in the coming years when there is so much uncertainty regarding grid role out and further policy reform. Strategic Grid Development Studies

As we move towards Net Zero, the modelling of the power system becomes increasingly complex. Load models need to consider electric heat pumps, electric vehicles and demand side-management. Grid analysis needs to consider dynamic line rating, power control devices, more HVDC and the various types of battery storage. Advanced modelling techniques using automation are required to blend these new technologies with the traditional approach.

Our Experience
TNEI has experience in all the main commercial simulation tools used for modelling power systems. In particular, TNEI utilises the automation capability of these tools with Python to represent the complexities of the future power system. TNEI specialises in all the typical simulation types, including load flow, optimal load flow, short circuit, dynamic stability and power quality. Contact us to find out more.

Regulatory and Strategic Advisory Services

TNEI is familiar with the regulatory landscape in Ireland and have supported clients there for over 15 years.

Our understanding of network charging is extensive, whereby TNEI have been working closely with an economic partner with whom we are jointly responsible for building, maintaining, and adapting DCUSA’s Distribution Use of System (DUoS) charging models. We have also undertaken numerous technical and market assessments for public sector industry organisations, such as Scottish Enterprise, who use these assessments to inform local and national strategy.

TNEI provides clear advice on electricity industry strategy and regulation to help organisations overcome these challenges. Our consultants draw on their comprehensive technical knowledge, significant project experience, and exceptional academic backgrounds to advise on everything from system operation to socio-economics. Our engineering expertise helps regulators, governments and network operators decide the future direction of the electricity industry. In turn, we use this knowledge to provide strategic advice to generators, suppliers and investors, helping them to remain competitive, now and in the future. Contact us to find out more.
