TNEI’s Gordon McFadzean was selected as a poster award winner for his posterThe potential benefits of direct-to-shore mvdc connections for offshore wind, at EWEA offshore conference on Wednesday 11th March.Gordon’s poster displayedrecent TNEI research into innovative medium voltage direct current (MVDC) connections for offshore wind, completed in partnership with Scottish Power and Scottish Enterprise. Results suggest that by eliminating the need for an offshore substation, direct MVDC could present considerable capex savings for large offshore wind farms. EWEA – GM.JPG

Dr Muhammad Ali presented a paper at EWEA Offshore 2015 in Copenhagen, on Wednesday 11th March. Muhammad presented a methodology for determining an electrical layout of an offshore wind farm that is cost-efficient, reliable and features lower losses. The method considers the complete electrical layout from the turbines to the shore and consider the developer’s budget and design requirements as an integral part of the process. The method is applicable to multi-MW offshore wind farms several kilometres away from the land. EWEA – MA.JPG

…that Rachel Allum, a Senior Consultant based in our Newcastle office, has been awarded full membership of the @APMProjectMgmt following a meeting of the APM Membership Panel on the 9th March 2015.

TNEI is currently delivering training in Electricity Markets to Ofgem. The course covers the evolution of the British Electricity Industry, a comparison of pool market structures versus bilateral models and an explanation of the BETTA mechanism including balancing and settlement. We also examine trading in the electricity markets and market liquidity, innovation, charging and interconnection. Topical areas such as EMR, European grid codes and European market coupling are also covered. TNEI also recently provided an introduction to power systems course to a large generator supplier, looking to understand more about grid integration and protection requirements for generators.
