What is Electricity System Restoration? Electricity System Restoration (ESR) is the procedure to recover from a Partial or Total Shutdown of the National Electricity Transmission System, which has caused an extensive loss of supply. The National Grid ESO, our electricity system operator, has a Grid Code obligation to, at any time, be able to restore the electricity network in the event of a Partial or Total Shutdown within the stipulated timeframes. When are the ESR tender round deadlines? National Grid ESO runs restoration tenders periodically to ensure there are sufficient generators and other assets available to provide this service. The latest ESR tender rounds began in 2022 and will continue into 2024, covering the full geography of mainland GB.
