In August TNEI were audited for compliance with BS OHSAS 18001, the British Standard for occupational health and safety management systems. The successful audit means that TNEI now hold certification again ISO 9001 (Quality), ISO 14001 (Environment) and BS OHSAS 18001 (H&S). TNEI have been certified under ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 since 2013, for quality and environmental management systems respectively. Adding a certified health and safety management system reflects our commitment to the safety of our staff, our clients and our contractors. This is especially important for our consultants who work on site, whether they are visiting substations, surveying birds, or monitoring wind farm noise. TNEI’s Planning and Environment Group has submitted a major planning application including Environmental Impact Assessment to East Ayrshire Council in respect of the Glenouther Renewable Energy Park on behalf of Gamesa Energy UK Ltd. The 12 turbine development, situated in proximity to the M77 north of Fenwick, has been subject to a lengthy and thorough design, planning and environment assessment process which involved extensive public consultation in the local area. TNEI contributed a range of services during the project, including planning, EIA project management, noise, shadow flicker, GIS, ecology and ornithology expertise. If approved, this major development would generate enough electricity to power c.20,000 households and offset over 1.1 million tonnes of carbon throughout its 25 year lifetime. TNEI will continue to support Gamesa throughout the post-submission process.

TNEI Services Ltd and Baringa Partners LLP were commissioned to produce a Good Practice Guide for Active Network Management (ANM). The guide sets out current good practice for the commercial arrangements and technical deployment of ANM technologies, and is intended to be of use to a number of electricity system stakeholders, including the network operators themselves, customers, product manufacturers, regulators and policy makers. The guide also looks to the future, identifying challenges and opportunities for ANM to become more widespread and the implications for future network systems operations. Active network management is a technique employed by Distribution Network Operators (DNO) to facilitate the connection of renewable generation to distribution networks. This is achieved by utilising available “‘spare’ capacity on traditionally passive networks in intact conditions and managing constraints in real-time to defer or avoid reinforcement or replacement of existing assets. Fiona Campbell has joined TNEI as Head of Planning Services to work in our Planning & Environmental Group based in Glasgow. Prior to joining us, Fiona was a technical director at a specialist renewable energy consultancy. She brings a wealth of experience from this and her previous roles in consultancy and local authority. Fiona’s areas of expertise include the delivery of planning services for energy and infrastructure projects, planning expert witness and business development. She will work closely with the team in Glasgow and across the business.
