On behalf of the Carbon Trust and Offshore Wind Accelerator (OWA), TNEI has undertaken a fresh investigation into the feasibility of DC arrays as a means of connecting offshore wind farms. The premise of DC arrays is to use medium voltage DC (MVDC) array cables rather than conventional 66kV or 33kV AC array cables to connect each wind turbine to the offshore substation(s). This has been a subject of ongoing research by academic and industry bodies looking at cost reduction opportunities for offshore renewables for many years, including the OWA in their original DC Array project in 2011. This Refresh Study considers the advancements in DC technology in the intervening years. This report contains a high-level summary of the findings from the study. Specialist independent energy consultancy, TNEI, is delighted to welcome Etienne du Preez and Craig McGlone to its South Africa and Manchester offices. Based in the TNEI Cape Town office, Etienne joins TNEI as a Senior Consultant, following Senior Electrical Engineer roles at AECOM and Eskom. Etienne works within our Power System Team, and has 8 years experience within the power generation industry. Etienne is primarily focused on power system studies, including load flow analysis, fault study analysis, power loss calculations, power transfer capability studies and grid code compliance studies (reactive power capability, LVRT/HVRT studies, harmonics) for wind farms. Etienne also has substation and wind farm collector detailed design experience with a particular emphasis on primary plant design, including substation earthmat designs using the CDEGS simulation software[r1] . AES Tietê Energia has acquired the 386MW Alto Sertão II wind portfolio in Brazil for R$600m ($193mUSD*), with technical due diligence support from TNEI and K2 Management. TNEI, a specialist energy consultant, supported K2 Management on this project, with the delivery of a technical due diligence review focused on grid connection arrangement, electrical design and installation, local transmission infrastructure and generation restrictions. K2 Management’s specialists delivered technical due diligence advice across the entire portfolio including a review of the turbine and balance of plant (BoP) technology and performance, an energy yield assessment report review, civil, grid and electrical design review and a technical review of the O&M contracts. The team also provided an independent energy yield assessment based on production data for the portfolio.
