Shetland Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

TNEI acted as the Planning Agent on behalf of Zenobe Energy Limited for the preparation and submission of a Section 36 Application to the Energy Consents Unit for a Battery Energy Storage System development on Shetland.

On behalf of Zenobe Energy Limited, TNEI submitted a Section 36 Application to the Energy Consents Unit (ECU) for a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) development on Shetland. This development will provide stability and support to the electricity network on Shetland.

TNEI prepared and submitted an EIA screening request to the ECU to successfully screen the BESS as non-EIA development. In tandem with screening, TNEI undertook pre-application consultation with Shetland Islands Council (SIC) to discuss the proposed BESS and to identify any concerns which SIC may have and how these could be addressed.

Subsequently TNEI prepared the Section 36 Application including co-ordinating multi-disciplinary inputs on landscape, noise, drainage, traffic. TNEI led on the historic environment appraisal, the assessment against planning policy and a summary of the consultation activities undertaken by Zenobe.

TNEI submitted the application to the ECU in July 2023. In December 2023 SIC recommended that the application be approved and in February 2024 the ECU issued Section 36 Consent for the development.
