TNEI appointed to support South Africa’s largest planned single-phase solar project to date

TNEI has been appointed by Northwest Electric Power Design Institute Co., Ltd. (NWEPDI) to provide grid code compliance services for the Notsi Solar PV Project, a landmark renewable energy development in South Africa.

Located near Senekal in South Africa’s Free State Province, the Notsi Solar PV Project is expected to deliver 475 MWac of renewable generation capacity, making it the largest planned single-phase solar project in the country to date. The project is being developed by Anthem and constructed by the Northwest Electric Power Design Institute (NWEPDI), a subsidiary of the China Power Engineering Consulting Group.

Once operational, the project will supply clean electricity to commercial and industrial customers through long-term wheeling agreements, with offtakers including Discovery Green and NOA Group.

As part of its appointment, TNEI will be responsible for delivering a comprehensive programme of grid code compliance services, including:

  • Compliance studies
  • Power system modelling
  • Grid code testing
  • RMS Model validation
  • EMT Model validation
  • Power quality assessments

These activities will help ensure the successful integration of the project into South Africa’s national electricity network.

The appointment represents a significant milestone both for TNEI and for the wider South African renewable energy sector, as the country continues to expand its utility-scale clean energy portfolio to meet growing demand for reliable and sustainable power.

Speaking on the project, Etienne du Preez, Principal Consultant at TNEI South Africa said: “The Notsi Solar PV Project is a significant development for South Africa’s renewable energy sector and we’re delighted to be supporting NWEPDI with the grid code compliance activities needed to enable its successful connection to the grid.”

TNEI brings extensive international experience in grid code compliance and power systems modelling, having supported renewable energy projects across a range of technologies and markets. The company’s specialist engineers have worked on projects ranging from utility-scale solar and wind developments to complex hybrid energy systems.

By providing robust technical analysis and practical project delivery support, TNEI helps developers, investors and asset owners navigate increasingly complex compliance requirements, reducing project risk and helping accelerate grid connection timelines.

The Notsi Solar PV Project is expected to play an important role in strengthening South Africa’s renewable energy capacity, while demonstrating the scale of investment and technical expertise being deployed to support the country’s energy transition.
