TNEI and Glasgow Caledonian University shortlisted for national innovation award

Celebrating a successful collaboration

TNEI and Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) have been named finalists in the 2026 Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Best of the Best Awards, earning a place in the prestigious Innovation & Technical Excellence category.

The recognition celebrates a successful collaboration between TNEI and GCU that has helped advance power system analysis capabilities at a time when electricity networks face increasing complexity from renewable generation, electrification and changing patterns of demand.

The Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project focused on answering a critical industry challenge: how to make power system studies faster while maintaining the high levels of accuracy required for modern network planning.

Bringing together academic expertise and practical industry experience, the partnership developed an advanced power flow solver designed to improve computational performance while supporting more sophisticated network analysis.

By enabling more effective modelling of uncertainty within electricity networks, the technology helps network operators and planners make better-informed decisions as they navigate the transition to a smarter, more resilient and lower-carbon energy system.

The project demonstrates the value of collaboration between industry and academia, combining cutting-edge research with real-world application to deliver tangible benefits for the energy sector.

The partnership has already received industry recognition, with the project contributing to success at the KTP Awards in 2025, demonstrating its ongoing impact and value.

“We are delighted that the partnership between TNEI and Glasgow Caledonian University has been shortlisted for the 2026 Innovate UK KTP Best of the Best Awards,” said Zahid Javid, Power System Innovation Scientist  at TNEI and leader of this project.

“This recognition reflects the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in the project and highlights the value that collaboration between industry and academia can bring to solving some of the energy sector’s most complex challenges.”

The Innovate UK KTP Best of the Best Awards celebrate the most impactful Knowledge Transfer Partnerships from across the UK, recognising projects that have delivered outstanding innovation, business benefit and societal impact.

The winners will be announced later this year. To find out more in the meantime:
