Owen started his journey at TNEI as an intern in 2020 alongside studying Computer and Electronic Systems at the University of Strathclyde. He joined TNEI as a full time Graduate Consultant in September 2021, working in the Networks and Innovation team, primarily with TNEI’s data scientists. In his role Owen applies computer science, statistics, and domain expertise to provide cutting edge services to the renewable energy sector.
What made you apply for a Graduate Consultant role at TNEI?
I was excited by the way my talents, interest in the environment, and personal development goals seem to align with TNEI perfectly. I learned through my internship that TNEI being a small company would mean I can always get direct and one-to-one support. This appealed to me as I knew I would grow professionally much faster than I would have in other larger companies.
Despite its size, TNEI takes part in a wide range of projects which meant no two days would be the same and I would have an extremely varied and intriguing workload which excited me!
Most of all, I felt like a career in the renewable energy sector is a noble pursuit and I have always aspired to have a career where my work is directly making an impact for the better of the planet.
How would you sum up your role as a graduate consultant?
Both challenging and exciting. I am frequently faced with problems which are a delight to solve and immediately make me better at my job and domain.
What skills have you learned/developed since joining?
I have observed and taken part in professional project management which I found is very different to what I had practiced in university. Because of the support and consideration I receive, I have also furthered my development in my specialised computer science domain through developing and applying solutions in a professional context.
Being entrenched in the UK energy sector has given me an awareness of how it works at every stage, as well as a good understanding of many power engineering concepts despite not being a focus during my education.
I would attribute most of my progress to working with the talented people at TNEI who have helped me develop my knowledge in every relevant field.
Outside of the working environment, I have become noticeably more mature and confident in day-to-day life.
Did you have any concerns about the job before you started?
My greatest concern was that I would be incapable of providing value to the team. However, the warmness of everyone, direct support, and consideration of my skillset from managers has helped me become a valuable and respected member of the team where my ideas are listened to and very often applied.
What is the best thing about working for TNEI?
The small and tight knit team creates a fantastic work culture where everyone is respected, heard, and welcome. This alongside the frequently organised social events make it very easy to network and familiarise myself with the people I work with whilst having a lot of fun!
My career progression through TNEI is transparent and I know exactly how, where, and why I must push myself to progress my professional life.
How often do you engage with clients?
Upon joining TNEI, I almost immediately engaged with a variety of clients in the UK’s distribution network operators and small private companies in the energy sector. Through this I have been building a solid understanding of the energy sector and its stakeholders allowing me to provide an excellent service. The variety of clients means my job stays fresh and I am directly in conversation with those leading the way in achieving net-zero in the UK.
Is there anything that has surprised you?
I found the shift from education to the workplace has been extremely easy thanks to the welcoming and supportive culture. Because of this I have impressed myself with the speed in which I have taken on responsibilities and began engaging directly with our clients.
I was immediately trusted with roles and responsibilities which I am trusted to complete independently, where my peers are on hand to answer any of my questions and address any training needs.
What advice would you give anyone who is thinking about applying to be a consultant at TNEI?
Be prepared to never stop learning and growing!
