Life as a Graduate Consultant at TNEI – Martin Stoichkov

Martin first discovered TNEI at an event organised by the EME society at the University of Strathclyde. Upon a successful application process, he joined TNEI as a Graduate Consultant in January 2023 and is based in the Glasgow office.

What made you apply for a Graduate Consultant role at TNEI?

I first met TNEI representatives at a University of Strathclyde event. TNEI is a small company working on various projects with different clients in the power industry. At TNEI Graduates receive a lot of support and TNEI give the option to start a part-time role before graduation. I was eager to start working as soon as possible and from the list of companies I was interested in, TNEI was the only one offering me that early start so it was a no brainer for me.

How would you sum up your role as a graduate consultant?

Challenging and rewarding. When you first start the job, you do not know much about the industry and how things work beyond the material from your lecture notes from university. The learning process is hard but engaging and at the end of your project, you have the feeling of making a difference.

What skills have you learned/developed since joining?

I have already learned and developed a lot of technical skills. Equally important are the skillsets related to project management, communicating with clients, overall industry knowledge that develop as you work on projects and they are very valuable as these skillsets are not something I possessed straight out of university.

Did you have any concerns about the job before you started?

I was mainly concerned with my part-time work period while I was finishing up my engineering degree. However, TNEI was very flexible in terms of when I work my hours and I have never had to work more hours than I was contracted to.

What is the best thing about working for TNEI?

The best thing about TNEI is definitely the people. Everyone I have worked with has been very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly.

How often do you engage with clients?

I engage with clients on a weekly basis. It has been a great opportunity to gain insight into projects and learn new things.

Is there anything that has surprised you?

It was surprising how quickly I started working on company projects. I started doing more and more tasks independently and it was great to learn ‘on the job’ and have your work presented. Of course, there is always someone to give you a helping hand when needed and check that your work is up to standard.
