Life as a Graduate Consultant at TNEI – Jasper Lages

What made you apply for a Graduate Consultant role at TNEI?

I was really interested in pursuing a career in renewable energy and the idea of working at a smaller consultancy such as TNEI appealed to me as it would give me early hands-on experience in projects and training tailored to my specific needs.

How would you sum up your role as a graduate consultant?

So far, I have worked on a variety of smaller projects right from the start of joining. I trained in areas associated with new projects as they appeared. I occasionally work with other departments when outsourcing project tasks like schematics for network models. My responsibilities have grown rapidly as I work on new projects and gain experience in ones I have already encountered.

What skills have you learned/developed since joining?

Already I have undergone training in several power system analysis software (IPSA, Power Factory, PSSE), and learned how to use this software to carry out different power system studies for clients, furthered my knowledge of the UK grid by carrying out feasibility studies which require qualitative assessment of data published by DNO’s. I have also developed a good understanding of how the connection process works through involvement in grid applications and designing/updating tools to calculate associated costs like securities, liabilities, and use of system charges.

What is the best thing about working for TNEI?

The variety of work and the working environment. TNEI seems to really value its employees and feels like a fun and friendly community to be a part of.

How often do you engage with clients?

I occasionally interact with clients mainly to clarify details of projects and send proposals. As I settle in and start to manage my own projects client engagement is becoming more frequent.

Is there anything that has surprised you?

How employee-oriented the company is. There is a lot of flexibility when it comes to working from home and a strong effort to create a friendly working environment.
