- Environmental Noise from BESS – Lessons learned
Jim Singleton, Specialist Acoustics Consultant, TNEI
Battery cooling systems, power inverters and transformers all generate noise, and with the continual increase in physical size and scale of developments over time, we are finding noise to be one of the key challenges for developers and operators alike. It is also now becoming a key commercial concern for plant manufacturers and suppliers. Jim will present some of the key lessons learned regarding BESS and Solar noise, with the aim of reducing project risk and developing effective projects. He will touch on case studies including the setting of appropriate noise level limits, the importance of accurate plant noise source data and the role of plant suppliers, the use of mitigation measures and noise control, and key changes to international noise standards (and the resulting implications).
- Emerging Planning Policy and Consenting Matters for BESS
Robert Garden, Planning Partner, CMS Law
The new NPPF (National Planning Policy Framework) was introduced in December 2024, and there are a number of other policy developments in the offing which will be key to energy storage development. Robert will explore the emerging policy position, including the introduction of grey belt in the NPPF and a recent energy storage decision, as well as exploring key issues to address in planning decisions such as fire risk and cumulative effects.
- GB Connections Reform – Implications for BESS
Calum Brook – Grid Connections Senior Consultant, TNEI
The energy industry is now on the verge of significant change, with NESO having submitted its final proposals for Connections Reform at the end of 2024 and implementation due in 2025. Grid Connections expert Calum Brook will outline the key changes to the connection process that have been proposed as part of GB Connections Reform. This will include an overview of the new gated application process, the interaction with the government’s Clean Power 2030 Action Plan, and the implications for BESS projects which either already hold connection agreements or are looking to obtain a connection in the future.
