Electricity System Restoration Tender Rounds – South-West and Midlands ITT2 Now Live

When are the ESR tender round deadlines?

National Grid ESO runs restoration tenders periodically to ensure there are sufficient generators and other assets available to provide this service. The latest ESR tender rounds began in 2022 and will continue into 2024, covering the full geography of mainland GB. The South-East and Northern tender has concluded. NGESO have made related decisions on successful ITT1 submissions for the South-West and Midlands and the ITT2 process for these generators is underway. ITT2 tendering is now active with a submission deadline of the 19th of May 2025, but time is of the essence, as this stage includes an extensive range of detailed technical review and commercial preparation.

Renewable technologies in the restoration process

These latest ESR tender rounds being run by National Grid ESO now not only afford generators the chance to participate in this crucial service, but they now also ensure inclusivity, welcoming a diverse array of technologies, including renewables, to contribute to the restoration process.

TNEI’s Experience

TNEI was a project partner on the world-first Distributed ReStart project, and we have also been involved in other restoration studies with SP Energy Networks (Synergy) and Carbon Trust. Our experience in this area has positioned us perfectly to support clients in the ESR tender rounds. Our team of specialist power system engineers can offer a range of services to generators and storage providers, and we have supported all technical aspects of the ESR tenders, spanning EOI (expression of interest), Feasibility 1 (ITT1) and Feasibility 2 (ITT2).

You can read case studies of our previous ESR work:

Our experience also highlights the value of early engagement with our engineers. In having us involved from the early stages at EOI right through to ITT2, we have witnessed a significantly more streamlined process. Choosing proactive support ensures a smoother journey from start to finish.

Benefits of TNEI supporting from the early stages:

  • Continuity of service throughout the three stages of the tender process
  • Detailed knowledge of client sites and capabilities allow us to highlight potential issues early
  • Leverage our experience of how the ESR tenders are run and how to manage multiple stakeholders and projects simultaneously

Upcoming ESR Tendering Process
