KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Duties & Responsibilities;

  • Undertake protection coordination studies and determine unit protection relay settings for equipment, including transformers, reactors, generators, transmission lines, and cables etc.
  • Perform protection design reviews and provide technical advice during project development and detailed design stages.
  • Review protection philosophies, protection settings reports, and technical documentation. Ensure quality assurance and compliance with relevant industry standards, regulations, and company procedures.
  • Support proposals, technical bids and teamwide business development activities.
  • Mentor and train junior consultants and collaborate across power systems, EMT, earthing, and grid compliance teams.
  • Be pro-active in collaborating with the UK team on project or proposal work.

REQUIREMENTS

Essential requirements include: 

  • Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline with 5+ years of experience in the power systems field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience delivering protection engineering consultancy services for transmission, distribution, renewable generation, and/or industrial power systems.
  • Strong understanding of protection principles for HV, EHV, and MV electrical networks and extensive experience in protection coordination and relay settings studies.
  • Knowledge of protection logic diagrams and experience developing relay setting schedules using software such as MiCOM Agile, PCM600, and SEL AcSELerator.
  • Good understanding of relevant industry standards and requirements and experience using industry standard protection and power system software
  • Ability to analyse fault performance and assess protection system behaviour under various network operating conditions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage personal workload and deliver projects to agreed timescales and quality standards.

Desirable requirements:  

  • Postgraduate degree in Electrical Power Engineering.
  • Experience of transmission-connected renewable generation projects.
  • Experience performing earthing design and safety assessments using CDEGS or equivalent software.
  • Experience carrying out electromagnetic interference (EMI), induction, or electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) studies.
  • Knowledge and practical experience of electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies using PSCAD, EMTP-RV, ATP, or similar software.
  • Familiarity with protection requirements associated with HVDC, FACTS, and converter-based resources.
  • Capability in Python, DPL, VBA, or other engineering automation tools.
