THE POSITION
TNEI is seeking an experienced planner to support the continued growth of our Environment & Engineering team. The successful candidate will lead and deliver planning, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and consenting services across a diverse portfolio of renewable energy and infrastructure projects throughout the UK.
Projects are likely to include:
- Onshore wind developments
- Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
- Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES)
- Solar PV developments
- Electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure
- Substations and grid connection projects
- Hydrogen and emerging energy technologies
The role will involve providing strategic planning advice to clients, leading multidisciplinary project teams, managing EIA processes, preparing consent applications and supporting business development activities. Depending on experience, the successful candidate will also contribute to team leadership, mentoring and the development of TNEI’s planning and consenting capability.
This is a client-facing position offering the opportunity to play a key role in delivering nationally significant energy infrastructure projects and supporting the UK’s energy transition. The role reflects the integrated planning, environmental and engineering approach adopted by TNEI’s Environment & Engineering team.
WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR
An experienced environmental planner with a background in large-scale infrastructure projects and a track record of EIA work, who is already working within, or is seeking to specialise in, the renewable energy sector whilst working within an integrated planning, environmental and engineering consultancy focused on supporting the UK energy transition.
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead planning and consenting strategies for major renewable energy and infrastructure developments.
- Manage the preparation and submission of planning applications across the UK and Ireland.
- Provide strategic planning advice throughout the project lifecycle from feasibility through to consent.
- Interpret planning policy and advise clients on planning risks and opportunities.
- Lead engagement with planning authorities, statutory consultees and key stakeholders.
- Support public consultation and stakeholder engagement activities.
- Work closely with TNEI’s environmental consultants, engineers and grid specialists.
- Review planning applications, EIA documentation and supporting technical assessments.
- Lead and coordinate EIA projects and supporting environmental assessments.
- Manage EIA Screening and Scoping requests.
- Coordinate specialist environmental disciplines and technical inputs.
- Review and contribute to Environmental Reports, EIA Reports and supporting documentation.
- Ensure compliance with relevant planning, EIA and environmental legislation.
- Integrate environmental mitigation and design development into project strategies.
- Manage project programmes, budgets and commercial performance.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary teams comprising planners, environmental specialists, engineers and GIS professionals.
- Act as a primary point of contact for clients.
- Maintain high standards of technical quality and project delivery.
- Support bid preparation and fee proposals.
- Develop and maintain client relationships.
- Identify opportunities for repeat and new business.
- Mentor and support junior consultants through team growth and development.
- Provide technical guidance to project teams.
- Share knowledge and best practice across the business.
- Support the growth and continuous improvement of TNEI’s EIA and consenting services.
REQUIREMENTS
Essential requirements include:
- Degree in Town Planning, Environmental Planning, Geography, Environmental Management or a related discipline.
- MRTPI qualified (or equivalent) or working towards Chartered status with demonstrable progress.
- Minimum 5+ years’ experience (Senior Consultant) or 8+ years’ experience (Principal Consultant) in planning consultancy, environmental consultancy or related sectors.
- A proven experience managing planning applications for major renewable energy, infrastructure or transmission projects.
- A strong understanding of UK planning systems.
- Demonstrable experience leading or coordinating Environmental Impact Assessment projects.
- Experience managing multidisciplinary project teams.
- Experience engaging with local authorities, statutory consultees and stakeholders.
- Excellent project management and programme management skills.

- Supporting planning documentation
- Experience working within renewable energy, infrastructure or environmental consultancy.
- Strong understanding of project development processes.
- Experience managing technical projects and client relationships.
- Strong commercial awareness.
- Experience in preparing technical reports and environmental assessments.
- Knowledge of environmental consenting requirements for infrastructure or renewable energy projects.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage workload effectively across multiple projects.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable requirements:
- Membership of ISEP (previously IEMA) or another relevant professional body.
- Knowledge of renewable energy, transmission and storage technologies.
- Experience supporting DCO, NSIP or nationally significant infrastructure projects.
- Experience of public inquiries, hearings or appeal processes.
- Track record of winning work and developing client relationships.
- Understanding of socio-economic assessment and policy appraisal.
- Understanding of project finance structures.
- Chartership or progression towards professional accreditation.
