Scottish Enterprise Multi-Terminal Test Environment (MTTE)

This project was undertaken by TNEI for Scottish Enterprise, with Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) one of the key project stakeholders.

The aim of this project was to identify potential opportunities for Scottish Government to increase the scope of SSE’s multi-terminal test environment project and hence develop economic opportunities for Scotland.  It also developed a business case for SSE which was submitted as part of their bid to Ofgem’s New Innovation Competition (NIC) for funding for the MTTE.

The project focused on multi-terminal, multi-vendor HVDC technology.  It included a review of global HVDC projects and market analysis for growth of European and GB HVDC projects.  The study considered SSE’s bid to Ofgem’s Network Innovation Competition (NIC) for a multi-terminal test environment and provided evidence and support to assist SSE in developing a business case.  The following activities were carried out:

  • Analysis of the HVDC market and assessment of market growth
  • Significant stakeholder engagement with potential MTTE customers including HVDC manufacturers, local and national supply chain companies, academia and research/ test facilities
  • Identification of potential Scottish Enterprise projects
  • Assessment of potential GVA and jobs that could be created through implementation of the proposed projects.
